The Boyfriend by Freida McFadden

The Boyfriend by Freida McFadden-368 pages

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Sydney Shaw, like every single woman in New York, has terrible luck with dating. She’s seen it all: men who lie in their dating profile, men who stick her with the dinner bill, and worst of all, men who can't shut up about their mothers. But finally, she hits the jackpot.

Her new boyfriend is utterly perfect. He's charming, handsome, and works as a doctor at a local hospital. Sydney is swept off her feet.

Then the brutal murder of a young woman―the latest in a string of deaths across the coast―confounds police. The primary suspect? A mystery man who dates his victims before he kills them.

Sydney should feel safe. After all, she is dating the guy of her dreams. But she can’t shake her own suspicions that the perfect man may not be as perfect as he seems. Because someone is watching her every move, and if she doesn’t get to the truth, she’ll be the killer’s next victim...

Thoughts: I am starting to understand why so many are reading Freida McFadden. She writes thrillers with unexpected twists and she does it so well. This one did not disappoint. I thought I had it all figured out, but I was wrong. The perpetrator turned out to be someone I wasn't expecting. If you like twisty thrillers (think Ruth Ware and Alice Feeney), then you should definitely check out Freida McFadden's books.

My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh

My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh

The anonymous narrator, a slender and beautiful blonde from a wealthy WASP family, is a recent Columbia University art history graduate grappling with her personal tragedies and the pressures of societal expectations. During her senior year in college, both of her parents died—first her father from cancer, then her mother in a suicide caused by an interaction between psychiatric medications and alcohol. Now residing on Manhattan's Upper East Side and increasingly dissatisfied with her post-collegiate life, the narrator seeks out Dr. Tuttle, a psychiatrist known for her unorthodox methods. Dr. Tuttle readily prescribes a range of sleeping pills, anti-anxiety, and anti-psychotic medications. The narrator, however, intends to spend as few hours awake as possible, numbing herself with a steady regimen of pills and repeatedly watching middlebrow movies on her VCR until the machine finally breaks down.

After being dismissed from her art gallery job, the narrator decides to subsist on her inheritance and unemployment benefits, embarking on a year-long quest to 'reset' her life through extensive sleep. But her "year of rest and relaxation" is regularly interrupted. Her college roommate Reva (who unabashedly envies the narrator's wealth and appearance) makes frequent unannounced visits, which the narrator allows despite her disdain for Reva's social climbing and annoyance at having to listen to Reva's problems—her own mother's terminal cancer, a frustrating affair with her married boss. The narrator is also occasionally in contact with an older boyfriend, Trevor (a banker who works in the World Trade Center), though he frequently cuts off their relationship to date women his own age, returning when one of them has dumped him or occasionally in response to the narrator's pleading.

The narrator initially makes trips out of her apartment only to a local bodega, Dr. Tuttle's office, and the Rite Aid to fill her prescriptions. But as she takes stronger and stronger medications, she begins leaving the apartment in her sleep, among other things to go to nightclubs (or so she gathers from Polaroid photographs and glitter she discovers when she awakes from her multi-day blackout). She also wakes up on a train headed toward the funeral of Reva's mother on New Year's Eve 2000. Convinced these activities—which have no appeal to the narrator in her conscious hours—are disrupting her efforts at complete rest, she decides she needs to sleep locked inside her apartment. She contacts Ping Xi, an artist represented by the gallery where she used to work, who agrees to bring her food and other necessities for four months in exchange for being allowed to make any kind of art project he wishes while she is unconscious: the only requirement is that all trace of him be gone when she wakes every three days to eat, bathe, and take another pill to put herself under again. To prepare, she empties her apartment, giving her designer clothes to the ever-covetous Reva, who has just been dumped by her boss—unaware that she is pregnant, he arranged a promotion that would transfer her out of his office and to the company's office in the World Trade Center. Reva plans to have an abortion; the narrator sleeps until June 1.

She readjusts to life slowly, spending hours over the summer of 2001 sitting in a park and refurnishing her once-expensively decorated apartment with mismatched, used furniture from Goodwill. But as she hoped, her worldview has been transformed by her rest: her contempt for Reva has evaporated and for the first time she earnestly reciprocates her friend's previously insistent declarations that "I love you", though now Reva is the one who has become distant. The narrator calls Reva once more, on her birthday in August, but Reva brushes off the call. They never speak again. On September 11, Trevor is in Barbados on his honeymoon and Reva dies in the terror attack on the World Trade Center. The narrator goes out to buy a new VCR to tape the news coverage, returning as time passes to watch the video, in particular footage of a woman leaping out of the North Tower whom she believes to be Reva.

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover-376 pages

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Lily Bloom has a complicated past with an abusive (to her mother) father who just died. She vows that she'll never be like her mother and stay in an abusive relationship. However, she meets Ryle Kincaid after moving to Boston and finally opening her own floral shop. They fall in love and he's mostly sweet and kind at first. Ryle is prone to fits of anger, though, and he hurts Lily a few times during these fits/episodes. Will Lily be able to leave Ryle like her mother couldn't with Lily's father? She has so many complicated feelings for a past love who she recently reconnected with and for Ryle, even though he's hurt her. What will Lily ultimately decide? This is definitely heavy material and not for those who are looking for a light read. That being said it is a good book and a good read. I wanted to read it in anticipation of possibly watching the movie based on the book.

Funny Story by Emily Henry

Funny Story by Emily Henry-387 pages

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Daphne is all set to marry Peter or, at least, she thinks she is. But after going out to his bachelor party with his best friend since childhood, Petra, he decides he's in love with her instead after she confesses that she's in love with him. Obviously, Daphne is devastated and now must move out of the house Peter seemingly bought for them to live in. Now, Petra is moving into the house with Peter and Daphne ends up moving in with Petra's ex-boyfriend, Miles. I enjoyed the pop culture references and snark. Both made me chuckle quite a few times. I found myself really rooting for Daphne and Miles and both are likeable characters. I really liked the ending.

Overall, I enjoyed this as I did Happy Place, also by Emily Henry.

The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose

The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose-337 pages

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Sarah Morgan is a very successful defense lawyer and has made partner at a law firm in Washington, D.C. She is married to Adam, a writer who hasn't had much success. He spends a lot of time at their lake house writing (so she thinks, at least) these days. It turns out he was not only writing but also had a relationship with another woman. When that woman turns up dead in their bed at their lake house Adam becomes the prime suspect in her murder investigation. Can Sarah successfully defend her husband against the murder charge and does she even want to? I have to say that there's a gigantic twist at the end and I did see part of it coming, but not all. This is a very good read. I've liked both books by Jeneva Rose that I've read so far and I intend to read more of her books.

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett-266 pages

This is the story of Mary Lennox, who as a young girl lives in India with her neglectful, selfish parents. An Ayah (Indian servant) attends to Mary's every need and Mary is kept out of sight of her parents and their friends. When tragedy strikes and her parents and Ayah all die of Cholera, Mary is sent to England to live at her reclusive uncle's (Mr. Archibald Craven) estate, Misslethwaite Manor. It is here that Mary finds a secret locked garden and slowly transforms from a bratty, selfish child to a mature young woman. She befriends Martha (her maid, sort of), Dickon, Ben Weatherstaff, a robin, and Colin Craven (her cousin). Colin also makes a miraculous change from a spoiled hypochondriac who lays in bed all day feeling sorry for himself to someone who is full of energy and runs around the secret garden. One thing in the book that I enjoyed that wasn't in any movie adaptation that I've seen is Dickon's and Martha's mom, Susan Sowerby. She plays a big role in helping Colin and Mary get well in the book and I enjoyed her character. Overall, I enjoyed the book and would rate it 4 out of 5 stars. I have enjoyed 2 out of the 3 movie adaptations that I've seen, also.

Happy Place by Emily Henry

Happy Place by Emily Henry-385 pages

Harriet is looking forward to going to her Happy Place (which is a cottage on the coast of Maine) and seeing her college friends (Sabrina, Cleo, Parth, and Kimmy). However, she doesn't expect to see her ex-fiance, Wyn. She and Wyn haven't told their friends about their break-up yet and decide to wait until the end of the week when Sabrina and Parth announce that they're getting married while they're all together. Also, the cottage is being sold by Sabrina's father, so this could be their last week together in Maine. As you can imagine, this makes for a very awkward start to the week for Wyn and Harriet. However, so much happens during the week and it's a very emotional ride for all of the friends. Will Wyn and Harriet get back together and can they make each other happy? Will Sabrina and Parth go through with the wedding? Will the friends still be together after this week? This is a really good exploration of what it means to be happy and dealing with depression, pressure, and expectations. I really enjoyed reading this book and I especially like the ending. I didn't know what to expect going into reading this because I don't usually read romance. Emily Henry has been a popular author recently, though, so I thought I'd try out her latest. I am glad that I did.

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen-368 pages

Jacob Jankowski falls on hard times after his parents unexpectedly die in a car accident in the 1930s. He joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show by accident after jumping their train. This is a story about Jacob and his time with the Benzini Brothers circus where he meets Marlena and works as a veterinarian for Uncle Al and August. Marlena is married to August who is the leader of the animal Menagerie. Jacob and Marlena quickly become star-crossed lovers, but can't act on it for fear of August and Uncle Al. Events unfold somewhat slowly early but very quickly near the end and this has a fairly surprising ending. I liked this book, although some of the things that happen are pretty sad. I would rate this 4 out 5 stars, though.

A Dog's Way Home by W. Bruce Cameron

 A Dog's Way Home by W. Bruce Cameron-327 pages

Bella is a loving stray dog found living in a den with cats under a condemned house by Lucas. He lives in an apartment across the street from the condemned house and feeds the cats frequently. Bella immediately takes to Lucas and he takes her in even though it's against his lease agreement. Lucas lives with his mom, who is an Army veteran who struggles with depression and seizures. Bella twice recognizes oncoming seizures from Mom and saves her. Bella and Lucas build a strong bond and Bella views him as her person. However, Lucas runs afoul of the mean man building new housing across the street by continuing to feed and advocate for the cats still living in the den under the house. This man, Gunter, recruits an Animal Control Officer (ACO) to certify Bella as a pit bull. Pit bulls are banned in Denver, where Lucas lives. Soon, Bella is captured by the ACO and separated from Lucas. They're reunited only to be separated again. Bella is determined to get home to Lucas. Will she be able to survive the nearly 400 mile trek back to Lucas? I would rate this one 3 out of 5 stars.

In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware

In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware-308 pages

I am really liking Ruth Ware. In a Dark, Dark Wood (Ware's debut) is the third of her novels that I've read so far and I've liked all of them. Leonora (Nora) Shaw is invited to a hen do (bachelorette weekend) in a glass house in the middle of woods for Clare Cavendish by email. Clare is Nora's former best friend from secondary school. Nora hasn't a clue as to why she's been invited since she hasn't seen Clare in 10 years. She soon finds out why, though, when Clare tells her that she's marrying Nora's ex-boyfriend from 10 years ago, James. Events escalate all the way to someone being murdered. Who killed this person and why? The attendees of the hen do all take the events differently. Nora ends up in hospital struggling to remember exactly how events unfolded and who the murderer was. All who were at the hen do are suspects. I did not expect the ending and I liked how Ware slowly revealed pieces of the puzzle. I am definitely going to read more of Ware's novels. I rate this one 4 out of 5 stars.

The Messy Lives of Book People by Phaedra Patrick

The Messy Lives of Book People by Phaedra Patrick, 327 pages

Liv, single mother of two, is a housecleaner barely scraping by.  Then she lands a job cleaning the home of her favorite author who is a recluse.  When the famous author dies suddenly, Liv is shocked to find out that the author has chosen her for a very important task.  It was ok if you are in the mood for a light read.

Any Way the Wind Blows by Rainbow Rowell

Any Way the Wind Blows by Rainbow Rowell -- 579 pages

Simon, Baz, Penelope, and Agatha have returned to England after their adventures in America.  Each of them has to decide what they're going to do next.  Simon has to decide whether to leave the magic world or not.  Baz is bouncing between two family crises.  Penelope is searching for a way to save a Normal from a demon's curse.  And Agatha is just done with it all.

This is the third and final book about Simon Snow and his friends.  I loved the first book as it completely turned the "Chosen One" prophecy on its head.  The second book I couldn't get into and never finished.  The third book I loved.  The story was interesting as well as the character development.  I did think the plot was a little too easily resolved.  However, I would definitely recommend this book and the entire series .

Tokyo Ghoul, Vol. 1 by Sui Ishida

Tokyo Ghoul, Vol. 1 by Sui Ishida-224 pages

I enjoy Manga and I wanted to read something new, different. This caught my eyes. Ken Kaneki is a freshman in college and loves reading. He's especially fond of a girl at his college and it turns out she enjoys reading the same authors and books. Ghouls have been eating humans in his hometown, Tokyo, seemingly at will. The girl who Ken Kaneki likes turns out to be a ghoul wanting to eat him. However, there's an accident that leaves her dead and him in bad shape and the doctors decide to operate on him. They give him her ghoul organs and he starts to notice changes in his thoughts, behaviors, and taste in food. Now he hungers for human flesh! Can he keep from eating his best friend since childhood? Why are there so many ghouls in Tokyo? I can't say this was my favorite Manga, but it's pretty good.

Horimya, v.15 by Hero

Horimiya, v.15 by Hero -- 178 pages

This was the latest volume in the manga series Horimiya.  This is probably one of my favorite manga series and I'm always impatiently waiting for the next volume to come out.  This volume dealt more with the secondary characters than Hori and Miyamura.  Still, I enjoyed the volume and can't wait for the next.

The Betrayed (The Betrothed #2) by Kiera Cass

The Betrayed (The Betrothed #2) by Kiera Cass-292 pages

I read the first book, "The Betrothed," last year and it was okay, but I want to see it through to the end. I enjoyed this book way better than the first. This is more like what I've come to expect from Cass (I've read "The Selection" series and "The Siren"). I really liked the ending to this book and duology. It ended how I wanted it to end. If you read "The Betrothed," then I would definitely recommend reading it through to the end.

Later by Stephen King

Later by Stephen King-Audiobook 6 discs, 6 hrs. 32 mins. (248 pages in print)

Jamie (James) Conklin is a unique young man. He can see dead people, although (as he says in the book) not in the same way as the kid in "The Sixth Sense." He lives with his single mother, Tia, in New York City. His mother is a literary publisher/agent. The main story centers around Jamie's ability to see and speak to the dead and how that causes someone once close to his mother (and him) to use him and his ability for their own purposes. Jamie must learn to live and cope with his ability and its consequences (some good and some bad). I am not a huge King fan, but I have previously read "Carrie" and I wanted to listen to a shorter audiobook on a recent road trip. This book is pretty good, though.

Scott Pilgrim, Volume 6: Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour by Bryan Lee O'Malley

Scott Pilgrim, Volume 6: Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour by Bryan Lee O'Malley-289 pages

Scott Pilgrim's fight against the evil exes to continue dating Ramona Flowers concludes in this sixth volume. Now, Scott must fight against Gideon. Gideon is the one who organized the seven evil exes for Scott to fight. Will Scott defeat Gideon? Will he and Ramona stay together? Overall, I like the books and the movie fairly equally. There are a few differences in how events unfold between the books and the movie, but the movie is fairly true to the books.

Scott Pilgrim, Volume 5: Scott Pilgrim vs. the Universe by Bryan Lee O'Malley

Scott Pilgrim, Volume 5: Scott Pilgrim vs. the Universe by Bryan Lee O'Malley-218 pages

Scott Pilgrim continues his crusade against the seven evil exes to win the right to continue dating Ramona Flowers. In this fifth volume, he has to face off against the Katayanagi twins, Ken and Kyle. Will he defeat the twins and will his relationship with Ramona last? Is Scott Pilgrim a bad person? Will Ramona go back to Gideon (who is the seventh and final evil ex Scott must face)? I am still going back and forth on whether I like the movie or the book series better. I'll know after the last volume.

Scott Pilgrim, Volume 4: Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together by Bryan Lee O'Malley

Scott Pilgrim, Volume 4: Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together by Bryan Lee O'Malley-205 pages

Scott Pilgrim's story continues his fight against all seven of Ramona's Evil Exes (they're now exes and not ex-boyfriends). This time Scott must fight against Roxie, who is a girl Ramona sort of dated during a "phase" where she experimented with her sexuality. Scott also figures out that he's in love with Ramona and says it aloud to her for the first time. I am going back and forth on whether I like the graphic novels/manga better or the movie better. I'm not sure at this point.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (Scott Pilgrim, Vol. 2) by Brian Lee O'Malley

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (Scott Pilgrim, Vol. 2) by Brian Lee O'Malley-200 pages

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World continues the story of Scott Pilgrim and his fight against Ramona Flowers' Seven Evil Ex-Boyfriends. The movie of the same name is based on the entire series by O'Malley. I have enjoyed reading the first 2 volumes, but I don't plan on reading the rest of the 6 total volumes at this time. If you like the movie, then you would like the manga/graphic novels and vice versa.
