These two volumes complete the QQ Sweeper trilogy. To be honest, I wasn't sure I was going to read them as I wasn't really all that drawn into the first volume. However, the story got better as it continued. The mystery of Fumi's background was interesting enough that I might even try to pick up the sequel Series Queen's Quality.

Magic Below Stairs by Caroline Stevermer
Frederick can't believe his good luck when he is chosen from his orphanage to work as a page boy in the local magician's house. However, it looks like there is a curse on the family manor that only Frederick can see.
This book is part of the Sorcery & Cecilia series by Patricia Wrede and Caroline Stevermer. It is a great addition to the series -- focusing on a young boy in the employ of the main characters of the series. A great fantasy read for kids.

This is the final of the Friday Harbor books. I did not care for it as much as the others. The characters were interesting, but the timeline seemed very forced. It also seemed quite a departure from the other books in that it unexpectedly went into bondage without any warning. I did like that it included book club questions in the back of the book again.

These volumes are really starting to up the romance factor in the series. It is becoming less comedic and more dramatic. Still, I am enjoying the series.

I really like this series of paranormal mysteries. I tore through all six books in a week. Unfortunately, I now have to wait any future books to be published.

Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
Sophie is cursed by the Witch of the Waste into an old woman. In shock, she leaves her family's hat shop and takes up residence in the wizard Howl's moving castle as his housekeeper after making a bargain with the fire demon Calcifer. Calcifer will break her curse if Sophie breaks his contract with Howl. But it isn't so easy to break the contract with Howl continuously falling in love, a scarecrow chasing Sophie, and searching for the missing Prince Justin and Wizard Solimon.
I love this book. Diana Wynne Jones was possibly the best fantasy author for kids and teens in my opinion. Her books are also intricately plotted with great characterization and moments of humor. I listened to this on audio and absolutely loved the narrator's version. The accents she used for the different characters were great. I especially loved her Welsh accent for Howl.

If you love dark fairy-tales, and folklore, you will love this book. It is well-written with twists and turns that will keep your head spinning. The book is very fast paced - much like Red Riding Hood - and almost as dark. It does contain some content that might not be suitable for younger readers. The publisher recommends grades 8 and up.

Felicity's family has never settled anywhere for very long. Just as Felicity and her little sister are getting used to a place, her mother decides to move on. Then they head to her mom's hometown - Midnight Gulch. Midnight Gulch used to have magic but now it's all gone. Except that it hasn't. Felicity knows that there is a little magic still left -- maybe enough to get her mom to stay in one place for once.
I picked up this book as the author is going to be a speaker at MLA this year. I really enjoyed the story. The idea of a girl who sees words everywhere and collects was truly unique. I also enjoyed how all the characters interacted and were tied together with their family histories. This is a great, fantasy story for kids.

Bad Machinery: The Case of the Team Spirit by John Allison
Six middle school students try to solve the mystery of a cursed football team while making sure an old lady doesn't lose her house.
I was not impressed with this book. There were several misspellings and the grammar made no sense whatsoever. It was almost as if the panels were not proof-read. I also think the story would have made better sense if you had read the previous web comics it is based on.

Wizard at Work by Vivian Vande Velde
The wizard is looking forward to the summer break from his students at the magic school -- to gardening, peace and quiet, and being himself. Then he is "cursed by a witch" who tells him he will never find happiness unless he learns to be less judgmental and to look beyond the surface of things. And so starts a summer where he is constantly being interrupted by princesses hoping to have curses broken, princes looking to rescue princesses, and towns wanting to rid themselves of unicorns.
I believe I have read part of this book before in a short story collection. I recognized the intro to the book as well as one of the stories. I did enjoy reading the rest of the book though.

Genevieve Buchanan has inherited a castle -- and a ghost to go with it! Seems the ghost is out for revenge. He wants to either drive crazy or kill off every member of the Buchanan family in retribution for bring killed and cursed by their ancestress in the 13th century. The problem is that Genevieve isn't like all the other Buchanans. He actually starts to like her.
This is the first ghost romance I have read in a very long time. This one was pretty funny. There is a lot of great banter between the characters. A funny romance.

Magic Below Stairs by Caroline Stevermer
Frederick is amazed at his good luck at gaining as post as a footboy in the house of a wizard -- all because he best fit the footman's uniform. He doesn't realize that it is the work of a brownie who used magic to make the uniform fit him perfectly until the wizard banishes the brownie from his house. Luckily the brownie doesn't stay banished as there is a curse on the wizard and his family that only the brownie and Frederick can break.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a pretty good fantasy story for kids. Reading the author's bio on the back flag I discovered that this is actually a standalone novel in the fantasy world series of books that Caroline Stevermer writes with Patricia Wrede. I look forward to hunting out the other books to read.

Enchanted by Alethea Kontis
Sunday is the seventh daughter of Seven and Jack Woodcutter. One day while writing in her journal in the woods she meets an enchanted frog. They quickly become friends and fall in love. Then one day, Sunday kisses the frog but runs off before noticing that he has changed back into the Prince Rumbold. Surely, their love will lead them to one another and a happy ending. The only problem - Sunday's family hates the prince as the cause of the downfall of the oldest son Jack Jr.
I loved this book. It was a great compilation of almost every fairy tale - Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Old Woman in the Shoe, The Frog Prince, etc. It was a wonderful original fairy tale even with the inclusion of several familiar fairy tale motifs. I liked the book so much that it wasn't until after completely finishing it that I realized that Sunday wasn't the heroine of the book - and it didn't bother me at all.

Norman has always been considered weird by his family and town. He talks to ghosts which tends to really freak everybody out. But now his unusual gift just might save everybody from the curse of a witch hanged in the town 300 years ago. It's up to Norman, his sister, and a few frenemies to stop the zombies sent by the vengeful witch.
I read this as it's been getting a lot of hype because of the movie soon coming out. I thought the book came first, but it turns out it is a novelization of the movie. Still, I enjoyed the book and look forward to watching the movie.

A retelling of all the classic (and original) fairytales rolled into one, this wonderful teen romance will keep you turning pages. In some ways, I preferred the author's version of the story much more than the originals. Sunday is one of seven sisters born to a woodcutter and his wife. She is the seventh of the seventh and very special. Each of her sisters were gifted with various talents that will help make amends for a terrible wrong of the past. Sunday's happens to be the gift of "Creator". When she unknowingly kisses a frog prince, she sets in motion a series of events that will ultimately cause her kingdom grief as well as joy. At times the author jumps from story to story and it can get just a little confusing. It's best to take the book one page at a time and try to not guess at the ending or whose story she is telling at that particular moment. Jack and the Beanstalk, The Frog Prince, Cinderella, Snow White, Rapunzel, Faeries, and many other stories blend into one fantastic tale.

Winter Rose by Patricia McKillip
Rois has always been drawn to the woods. When Corbet appears in town and starts to rebuild his family's house in the woods, Rois feels compelled to solve the mystery surrounding him and his family's curse.
I love Patricia McKillip books. This is one of her older books that I had missed reading before. I truly enjoyed it. A definite must read for her fans.
