Aging With Grace by David Snowdon, PH.D.

Aging with Grace: What the Nun Study Teaches Us About Leading Longer, Healthier, and More Meaningful Lives - David Snowdon, PH.D. - 219 pages

In 1986 Dr. David Snowdon, one of the world's leading experts on Alzheimer's disease, embarked on a revolutionary scientific study that would forever change the way we view aging--and ultimately living. Dubbed the "Nun Study" because it involves a unique population of 678 Catholic sisters, this remarkable long-term research project has made headlines worldwide with its provocative discoveries.

Yet Aging with Grace is more than a groundbreaking health and science book. It is the inspiring human story of these remarkable women--ranging in age from 74 to 106--whose dedication to serving others may help all of us live longer and healthier lives. Totally accessible, with fascinating portraits of the nuns and the scientists who study them, Aging with Grace also offers a wealth of practical findings: * Why building linguistic ability in childhood may protect against Alzheimer's * Which ordinary foods promote longevity and healthy brain function * Why preventing strokes and depression is key to avoiding Alzheimer's * What role heredity plays, and why it's never too late to start an exercise program * How attitude, faith, and community can add years to our lives.

A prescription for hope, Aging with Grace shows that old age doesn't have to mean an inevitable slide into illness and disability; rather it can be a time of promise and productivity, intellectual and spiritual vigor--a time of true grace.

Having been taught for 13 years by the School Sisters of Notre Dame, I was intrigued by this book, and what it could teach us about aging.

Built to Move, Starrett and Starrett | 336 pages

Built to Move, Starrett and Starrett | 336 pages

The human body was meant to move - to walk, to carry, to bend. And yet, in the modern world we spend the bulk of our time sitting in front of screens. The result is aches and pains for most of us.

I liked what this book offers: 10 simple "tests" to see how mobile your body is, then steps to improve from that baseline. The best part is the majority of the suggestions are very doable in my real life, added to the margins around everything else. It isn't saying you need to add hours of exercise every day - just a few movements here and there. I incorporated some over the weekend and my upper back feels better already!

Sex, Not Love by Vi Keeland

Sex, Not Love by Vi Keeland - 300 pages

Natalia isn't looking for a relationship.  She just wants to get laid.  So imagine her shock when a stranger at a wedding offers himself up.  Although she refuses, he doesn't give up.  Over the course of a year, they slowly becomes friends and then much more.

I was surprised how much I liked this book.  It was really funny.  I only read it because of this month's challenge, but I might see if I can find some more books by this author.

What are sleep disorders? by Leanne K. Currie-McGhee

What are sleep disorders? by Leanne K. Currie-McGhee - 80 pages

Everybody needs sleep, but millions of Americans are sleep deprived due sleep disorders, and this negatively impacts their health and daily lives. What Are Sleep Disorders? examines what this disorder is, what causes it, what it is like to live with, and how or whether it can be treated or cured.

Lets Talk About Sleep: A Guide to Understanding and Improving Your Slumber by Daniel A. Barone

Lets Talk About Sleep: A Guide to Understanding and Improving Your Slumber by Daniel A. Barone - 188 pages

News about sleep is everywhere we turn, and the statistics are numbing: Some 50-70 million Americans are affected by chronic sleep disorders and intermittent sleep problems; an estimated 30-35% of adults complain of insomnia; one in every 25 Americans takes a prescription sleep medication; more than a third of American adults don't get enough sleep on a regular basis; sleep disorders account for an estimated $16 billion in medical costs each year, plus indirect costs due to missed days of work, decreased productivity and related factors.

And questions abound: why do we need to sleep at all? What happens when we sleep? What happens to the brain? We know the brain is active when we sleep, but what about the mind? And what are dreams?

An accessible and lively take on sleep, this book provides answers to those and other key questions. Along the way, it highlights the lessons a well-known neurologist has learned and what he shares with his patients on a daily basis. It discusses -- in terms everyone can understand -- what we know about sleep, what can go wrong with it, and what we can do to fix it. It also delves into what some of the great scientists and spiritual teachers have told us about sleep.

The book is packed with useful information and suggestions that will improve all aspects of readers' lives.

Balancing In Heels: My Journey To Health, Happiness, And Making It All Work by Kristin Cavallari, 239 pages

I did not know Kristen Cavallari had a book out until I saw it on the shelf.  Most people know her from her reality shows The Hills and Laguana Beach, but I knew her from Dancing with the Stars.  Also, she is married to the Chicago Bears quarterback, Jay Cutler.  This book is full of pictures of her and her family.  The books offers health, fitness, and fashion tips for the busy working woman, mom and wife. She also writes about her love story with Jay Cutler and her pregnancies.
