Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick-224 pages

As you may know, this novel is/was the inspiration for the films Bladerunner and Bladerunner 2049. The characters' names are the same in the movies as in the book, but that is the only thing exactly the same. In the novel, keeping animals (such as electric sheep, but there are real animals, too) is seen as a status symbol. In the movie, animals are not part of the story. Anyway, the novel is thought-provoking and a good read. The biggest difference between a human and an android is empathic capacity. However, androids are treated as worse than animals because of this difference. Many humans are not very empathetic in real life and it makes one think about empathy and about the dangers and challenges of technology. Also, it causes one to think about what the future might be like, especially if androids really do come to fruition (of which I am not a fan). Overall, this was a good, interesting read.

Ten Big Ones by Janet Evanovich

Ten Big Ones by Janet Evanovich, 312 pages

Stephanie Plum is back at it in book 10 of the Plum series.  I kind of jumped around reading this series.  But, I think as long as you read the first one in the series. you can read these in any order. In Ten Big Ones, bounty hunter Stephanie Plum finds herself stuck in the usual dilemmas of having her car blow up and trying to choose between Ranger and Joe Morelli.  When the local deli mart is robbed by a Trenton street gang, Stephanie finds herself in a dangerous situation.  Who will come to her rescue?

Takedown Twenty by Janet Evanovich

Takedown Twenty by Janet Evanovich, 302 pages

This is Janet Evanovich's latest novel in the Stephanie Plum series.  I loved this book.  It was a light, fun mystery that does not take itself too seriously.  In Takedown Twenty, Stephanie finds herself torn between her boyfriend, Morelli, and the hot hunk who always comes to her rescue, Ranger.  Stephanie is on the hunt for Uncle Sunny who has skipped out on his bond and is wanted on some pretty serious charges.  While looking for Uncle Sunny, Stephanie has to find the person who is murdering Bingo Grandmas and dumping their bodies in dumpsters around town. So, Stephanie and Lulu go under cover playing bingo and trying to find the killer.  I enjoy these Stephanie Plum books so much, but I wish Stephanie would choose a man.  The rate she is going, it may take another 20 books!

Zombie Powder, vol. 1 by Tite Kubo

Zombie Powder, vol. 1 by Tite Kubo - 208 pages

Elwood has been picking pockets to try to get enough money for his sister's medical treatments.  After his sister is killed when the local gang thinks he is holding out on them, Elwood hooks up with Gamma, the most notorious bounty hunter in the world.  They set out to find the Rings that allow people to either come back from the dead or to become immortal.
This is Tite Kubo's first manga work.  I enjoy his Bleach series so I thought I would check out this one.  The first volume is enjoyable although it is pretty much as Kubo describes it as continuous fight scenes with breaks to pause as they move from town to town.

Notorious Nineteen by Janet Evanovich

Notorious Nineteen by Janet Evanovich, 311 pages

In the most recent Stephanie Plum book, Stephanie has the usual problems.
Her car explodes, and she continues to be torn between Ranger and  Joe Morelli, all while chasing felons to earn her way.  People continue to be able to break in to her apartment without her knowing.  Eventually, you think she will get a stronger lock for her door; drive the same car for more than a month; and eventually chose between Ranger and Joe.  My money is on Joe. Notorious Nineteen doesn't disappoint with humor.  My question is "Will their be a number twenty?"

Good Day in Hell by J.D. Rhoades

Good Day in Hell by J. D. Rhoades - 288 pages

Rhoades's second Jack Keller is another roller coaster action thrill ride.  Keller discovers early on that his bail skip suspect is involved in the murders being investigated by his girlfriend, sheriff's deputy Marie Jones.  A lot of bloodshed ensues and many lives including Keller's are put at risk in pursuit of justice.  There is nice exposure of Keller's military backstory that helps you understand him and his risk taking much more.  If you like Lee Child, Rhoades is author to check out.

The Devil's Right Hand by J. D. Rhoades

The Devil's Right Hand by J. D. Rhoades - 288 pages

Ex-cons Dewayne and Leonard thought they had a foolproof plan.  Rob the old man at the construction site of the cash payroll and make a clean getaway.  Their first mistake was leaving the owner dead in the course of the robbery.  The owner's son is a violent drug dealer that vows vengeance on the murderers of his father and anyone who gets in his way.  Bounty hunter and military veteran Jack Keller is tasked with capturing Dewayne who has skipped bail on a previous charge.  Even Keller is thrown by the level of violence that ensues in the quest to bring Dewayne and Leonard to "justice".  This book is very gritty and starts out slow but the payoff is rewarding.  Keller is a tortured hero along the lines of Jack Reacher.

Explosive Eighteen by Janet Evanovich

Explosive Eighteen: A Stephanie Plum Novel by Janet Evanovich --- 305 pages

I've always enjoyed Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels for the sheer outrageous fun of watching Stephanie stumble from one disastrous situation to the next. Her haphazard attempts to earn a living as a bounty hunter for her sleazy cousin Vinnie's bail bond agency, her hilariously complicated love life, and her dysfunctional but always there for her family, usually have me laughing hard enough to cry.

That said, I was disappointed in her last effort, Smokin' Seventeen, and wondered if perhaps the series was finally running out of steam. Happily, Evanovich is back on her game in Explosive Eighteen.

Stephanie runs for home when her dream Hawaiian vacation turns into a nightmare. Everyone in town is speculating about what went wrong, but Stephanie isn't talking, and neither are Morelli or Ranger (though both are sporting some intriguing bruises). A chance encounter on the plane leaves Stephanie briefly in possession of a mysterious photograph, and suddenly not only the FBI, but assorted gangsters are all on Stephanie's case.

Meanwhile her archnemesis since gradeschool, Joyce Barnhardt, suspect in a murder investigation, is squatting in Stephanie's apartment and refusing to leave until Stephanie retrieves crucial evidence from the murder victim's house. And Stephanie's friend Lula, as usual, has fallen for yet another unsuitable guy. This time it's a bail jumper named Buggy, who keeps stealing Stephanie's car. Can Stephanie solve the murder, find the photo, escape the gangsters, placate the FBI, bring Lula to her senses and finally make up her mind between Morelli and Ranger?

Three to Get Deadly by Janet Evanovich - 300 page

Three to Get Deadly by Janet Evanovich - 300 pages

With the first of Janet Evanovich's books coming out as a movie, I thought it may be a good time to start reading this popular mystery series everyone has been talking about.  Reading them in order, with fifteen more to go may be a daunting task.  In the third book of the series, we get to know lingerie saleswoman turned bounty hunter, Stephanie Plum, much better.  Stephanie is set to find her Uncle Mo who is wanted on a concealed weapons charge.  As Stephanie gets herself in tight situations, along the way we get to know her family and her cohorts.  These books are definitely entertaining reads, wishing we all could be as fearless as Stephanie Plum.

Explosive Eighteen by Janet Evanovich

Explosive Eighteen by Janet Evanovich--305 pages

Another zany Stephanie Plum adventure.  The FBI, the fake FBI and others are after her because they think she has information from a dead man found in a garbage can at the LA airport.
