Giving Up the Ghost: A Story About Friendship, 80s Rock, a Lost Scrap of Paper, and What It Means to Be Haunted by Eric Nuzum

Giving Up the Ghost: A Story About Friendship, 80s Rock, a Lost Scrap of Paper, and What It Means to Be Haunted by Eric Nuzum - 320 pages

This memoir has many elements I don't like in books:  a non-linear storyline, recreated conversations from true events, and no clear resolution.  But that said, it was an intriguing read.  Nuzum felt haunted by a presence in his parent's attic during his adolescence which may or may not have been a symptom of his spiral into drugs and mental illness.  Many of the vignettes are very vivid and you feel in the moment Nuzum is retelling, whether it be detailing the support of his only friend Laura or his quest to discover if ghosts are real.  If you've ever felt constrained by what others label as "normal" behavior, you will find something to relate to in this memoir that will leave you thinking about the nature of reality and what it truly means to be a friend.

  1. Out of curiosity, was it the 80s rock, friendship, paper, or being haunted that got you interested in this book? Or was it the long title? :P

  2. The cover and the title grabbed me at first and the being haunted is what drew me in.
