A Murder in Zion by Nicole Maggi

A Murder in Zion by Nicole Maggi - 356 pages

Emmeline Helliwell, special agent with the National Parks Service is returning home to Utah to heal and regroup after her mother's death.  Her intent is to turn in her badge and take over her mother's bakery for a much quieter life; but when the dead body of a childhood friend turns up in the Narrows, the case is too personal for her to turn down.  This thriller takes Emme deep into Zion National Park to find clues to how and who the killer or killers are.  On top of dealing with the heartache of losing her mother, Emme is also dealing with her younger sister who finally shows up at their home with her past emotional trauma.

Emme and her younger sister are dealing with an abusive childhood past (by their father) and trying to sort through their mothers belongings all while being pulled closer and closer into the sights of a killer. As more dead bodies start to pile up, Emme along with her sister, a pod-caster, another agent, and family friend work tirelessly to stop a killer who may be tied to a reclusive group that lives within Zion.

The author does a great job of projecting the image of Zion and the Narrows throughout the book.  All in all I liked the book, though I felt certain parts were drug out a bit.  To me this was more a thriller instead of a true mystery.  I didn't feel there was much guessing in who the killer/killers were.  No twists or surprises that I didn't expect.  This is the first in this series for Nicole, not sure if I will read the next?

Christmas at Harrington's by Melody Carlson

Christmas at Harrington's by Melody Carlson -167 pages

This is one of my favorite Melody Carlson books!   It's been a while since I have read this but I could read it many times.  So heartwarming. Lena is penniless, has no friends, is trying to restart her life, and is almost hopeless until a secondhand red coat lands her a job as Santa at a department store.  This is a story of hope and kindness and the spirit of Christmas.  Don't just read this a Christmas time.

Kate Borrows seems to have it all but needs a change.  After binge watching a show on tiny homes and feeling alone in her big home, she decides to make a change to a simpler life.  This is a feel good book.  Melody Carlson is one of my favorite authors.  This is a nice easy uplifting read.

Modern Baby Crochet by Stacey Trock

Modern Baby Crochet by Stacey Trock - 80 pages

If you are looking to brush up on your crochet skills, this is a great little book.  The beginning of the book gives instructions on different crochet stiches with a picture on how to execute the stitch.  The rest of the book goes into more details on different items you can make from a simple blanket, pillows, and a mobile.  I've referenced this book several times.

ICELAND by Blastoff Discovery

ICELAND by Blastoff Discovery - 32 pages

Great youth book about Iceland.   The book is small but has lots of information about Iceland in easy to ready content.  Iceland was one of the first countries to give women the right to vote, and the first nation to elect a woman president.   You can find snow, glaciers, volcanos, waterfalls and heated pools on Iceland.  The people of Iceland are typically very friendly and upbeat.  I would recommend the book for anyone interested in learning the basic fact and seeing some great images of Iceland.

U.S. National Parks Great Smoky Mountains National Park by Blastoff! Discovery

U.S. National Parks Great Smoky Mountains National Park by Blastoff! Discovery

The Great Smoky Mountains is the most visited national park in the U.S. The smoky mountains began forming around 300 million years ago, and the park was established in 1934. The park lies along a border between Tennessee and North Carolina. It covers 816 square miles of forested mountains. The park gets is "smoky" name from all the fog that regularly covers the area.  There are many ways to visit the park (by vehicle, bike trails, horse back, and hiking).  The park is home to many plants and wildlife (including the American black bear, northern saw-whet owl, bobcats, bats, deer, and more).  Great book, very informative for youngsters and adults.

The 1980s by Stephen Feinstein

The 1980s by Stephen Feinstein - 96 pages

The 1980s was my era.  So much happened in the 80s.  Good and Bad.

Michael Jackson and Madonna revolutionized the pop music era of the 80s. Shopping malls were everywhere, even in cities. Credit was easy to obtain from banks so spending was up but consumer debt exploded. The US and Soviet Union relations tried to improve. This was also the era of the Yuppy (young Americans with total dedication to their careers with the willingness to work hard hours to get ahead).  Health clubs popped up everywhere with aerobic classes. Work out outfits and leg warmers were the trend.  Video games, music, and movies were a big influence, along with iconic TV shows such as Dallas, Dynasty, Knots Landing.  People would plan their weeks around watching these shows. But then there were the negative 80s -  The stock marked crashed October 19, 1987. Our President Reagan was shot, AIDS had a major explosion. The Exxon Valdez Disaster in 1989, and Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster in 1986 were a few.    The late 70's and 80's were my time.  I have to say I loved the 80s.  I loved the music, such a great variety, loved that dancing was so popular, lots of great comedy and light sitcoms.  In my opinion, people had more of a sense of humor-they could laugh at themselves and we enjoyed life.  "Ah, the 80's"  :)

Murder She Wrote - A Killer Christmas by Jessica Fletcher & Terrie Farley Moran

Murder She Wrote - A Killer Christmas by Jessica Fletcher &          Terrie Farley Moran - 259 pages.

Not is all so merry and bright in Cabot Cove this Christmas.  Eve Simpson, Cabot Cove's leading realtor has found a buyer (Boston tycoon John Bragdon) for the old Jarvis homestead.  Unfortunately, Kenny Jarvis appears, after being missing and presumed dead for years, to stop his sister from selling their childhood home.

Eve organizes a welcome dinner for Mr. & Mrs. Bragdon to meet the town's leading citizens, including Jessica Fletcher;  but Kenny has a not-so-welcoming message for Mrs. Bragdon.   He has threatened that she will never live in his house.   Within hours, Mrs. Bragdon is found dead and Kenny is the prime suspect.  Did Kenny really kill her?  Jessica has her hands full once again helping the town's sheriff solve this murder all while she is on a committee to help the town organize a grand Christmas festival to win a major contest for the state of Maine.

I enjoyed the book.  I am a long time Murder She Wrote fan, so I love that these books are still being written with the same characters that I remember from the television series.   It is a light, easy, and cozy mystery.  Enjoy

Conclave by Robert Harris

Conclave by Robert Harris - 304 pages

One hundred and eighteen cardinals will gather behind locked doors of the Sistine Chapel for the world's most secret election.  These are all holy men; but they are men, and not immune to temptations of power and ambition.  This is a thriller packed with ambition, sexual scandal, corruption and terrorism. If that's not enough, one final surprise at the end.

This is now a major motion picture currently at theatres that I plan to see, but I wanted to read the book first.  I really enjoyed it.  There are quite a few characters to juggle, but as the book goes on it gets easier to distinguish them.  Although this is fiction, the book really sheds some light on the fact that these cardinals are human like all other men. They have flaws, inner turmoil, questions, doubts.

I am looking forward to seeing the movie to see how it compares.

The Sparkle Box by Jill Hardie

The Sparkle Box  by  Jill Hardie  - 32 pages

What a sweet book.  Yes, it is not Christmas yet, months away still; but this is a great book to read a bit ahead of Christmas.

What a great book to encourage the spirit of giving at Christmas time for kids, and not just have them thinking of what presents they will be getting.  Such a sweet idea of a sparkle box.    This book encourages children (as well as adults)  to think of ways they can help others during the holiday season and the amazing feeling they will receive by doing so.

A Voice Named Aretha by Katheryn Russell-Brown

A Voice Named Aretha  by  Katheryn Russell-Brown -  40 pgs.

The book is written well for children in a way that gives a lot of information about Aretha Franklin.   The book takes you from her heartache of losing her mother just before she turned 10, singing solo in church in front of thousands of people a few months later, joining the Gospel Caravan with her daddy's traveling ministry at 12, signing a record deal at the age of 18, thru her being the first woman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and more.  At the end of the book there are several pages of other information and facts about Aretha.

Under the bodhi tree a Story of the Buddha by Deborah Hopkinson

Under the bodhi tree  by  Deborah Hopkinson - 32 pgs.

This book is the Story of Buddha.  The book briefly and easily explains how he came to be Buddha.  Starting from his childhood and progressing through his journeys in life, to how he found his inner peace.  The book is illustrated with calming color choices which fits the story.

Witches by Cheryl Christian

Witches by Cheryl Christian - 24 pg.

What a cute, fun easy read book.  Simple reading and beautifully illustrated pages!  This book is so colorful.  I think kids would enjoy just looking at the pages.  There are so many hidden images on every page to really look for.  All the witches are just smiling kids dressed up for Halloween, having fun on every page.

Holiday History Independence Day by Kristine Spanier, MLIS

Holiday History Independence Day by Kristine Spanier, MLIS

Informative children's book about our Independence Day; how it came to be, when it came to be, and when and how we celebrate it. Did you know that even though the Declaration of Independence was approved on July 4, 1776, it did not become a national holiday until 1870.   The book shows the original American Flag from 1777 and how it compares to our current American Flag.  The book also discusses a few other countries and how they celebrate their independence.

Big Cats Cougars by Bullfrog Books

Big Cats  Cougars by Bullfrog Books - 24 pgs.

Big Cat Cougars another great book for kids.  Large photos and information about cougars (which are also called Mountain Lions).  Explains where they mostly live and their habits.
