The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer - 178 pages

Bree Tanner is a newborn in a coven of other very young vampires.  She and her counterparts were created for a purpose that none of them but their leaders know.  Bree starts to learn the truth and eventually, everything comes to light.

This is a novella that goes with Meyer's Eclipse.  Bree is the vampire that surrenders herself to the Cullen clan during the big battle with Victoria's newborn vampire army in Eclipse.

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart - 320 pages

Cadence Sinclair is born into a wealthy family that goes to their private island every summer.  Her two cousins and her aunt's boyfriend's nephew are all the same age.  Cady so loving calls their group of four "The Liars."  Their group is inseparable until summer fifteen, where an accident happens to Cady.  Over the next two summers, everything changes as Cady remembers what has happened - what she has done.

This book has a twist ending that I never once expected, although the back of the book literally says, "Read it.  And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE."

Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer

Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer - 672 pages

Midnight Sun is a companion novel to Twilight because it is a retelling of the main events of the original - but this time through Edward's eyes.

Bella Swan moves from Arizona to Forks, WA, and completely unnerves and intrigues Edward upon her arrival.  His "vegetarian" vampire way of life is threatened because Bella has the most appealing smelling blood that Edward has ever experienced.  Instead of being scared, Bella embraces the danger of her newly discovered love interest, Edward.

It was interesting to read an old favorite from my adolescence through a different character's viewpoint.  It was more creepy at times than romantic, but I still enjoyed rereading the story as an adult.

Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer

Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer - 768 pages
Book 4 of the Twilight Saga

Bella and Edward get married and soon after their honeymoon, discover that Bella is pregnant.  Except she's still human and her baby is growing at a rapid rate.  She willingly risks her human life for the vampire immortality she has been seeking all along.

We also get Jacob's perspective in this book.  He is coming to terms with the fact that Bella didn't choose him.  His wolfpack learns of Bella's half-vampire fetus and plans to kill Bella and her unborn.  Jacob becomes very protective over Bella and leaves his pack to start his own.

I always thought that this was a weird way to end these novels, with Bella almost dying to give birth to a half-vampire daughter and becoming immortal in the process; Jacob imprinting and declaring a newborn baby his soulmate...

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer - 544 pages
Book 1 of the Twilight Saga

The reading challenge for November has inspired me to re-read the Twilight saga, especially because I've been wanting to read Stephanie Meyer's new book, Midnight Sun.

Bella Swan moves to rainy Forks, WA from Arizona, to live with her father after her mother remarries and moves to Florida.  Forks seems to be a relatively boring and average town where nothing ever happens.  After meeting a mysterious classmate, Edward Cullen, Bella quickly learns that Forks might be more interesting than she initially believed.  She soon discovers that Edward and his family are secret vampires.

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens - 384 pages

This book has two timelines that eventually converge.  Kya is around six years of age when she is left to raise herself in the marshes of North Carolina.  She is ostracized and struggles on her own, eventually finding a rhythm for life.  Along the way, she meets Tate, a kid a little older than her that feels protective over her and wants to help her.  As they get older, and Tate goes away to college, a local city boy, Chase becomes interested in Kya as well.  Her story is told over the years of 1952-1969.

The second story line starts in 1969 when the body of Chase Andrews, one of the boys who was involved with Kya, is found in the marsh.  The townspeople claim it was murder and that the "Marsh Girl" did it.  But did Kya kill him?

Reese Witherspoon's production company, Hello Sunshine, is creating a movie adaptation of this book!  As of July 2020, it is still in pre-production.

How to Be Safe by Tom McAllister

How to Be Safe by Tom McAllister - 240 pages

A school shooting occurs and a female English teacher is blamed for it.  Despite being cleared of the mass murders, Anna Crawford's life is completely uprooted.  This book is her cathartic and satirical way of explaining the events of what has happened in her life and the small town of Seldom Falls.

Karen Graham found this book from a webinar, so we decided to read it together because it sounded interesting!  It was intriguing to see a male author pretty accurately depict a female's experience while describing a sensitive topic.

I, Robot by Isaac Asimov

I, Robot by Isaac Asimov - 256 pages

A collection of robot-themed short stories as told by robopsychologist, Dr. Susan Calvin to an interviewer.  These short stories range from robots gone amok, to mind-reading robots, to robots who are secretly running the world.  Every story deals with Asimov's famed Three Laws of Robotics:  a robot may not injure a human, or through inaction, allow a human to come to harm; a robot shall obey any instruction given to it by a human; and, a robot shall avoid any situations that could bring harm to itself.
