My Thoughts: We read this for book club. I found it a fun read, a bit unbelievable at times. If anyone is struggling with self-esteem and what to do with their life, I recommend this book as a stepping stone, even if some of it is just for humor. If you enjoy an easy read and learning how others learn to love themselves, i recommend it.

One of my favorite books in the last few years has been "The Midnight Library" by Matt Haig, so I was really looking forward to reading this book by him. And while I did (eventually) come to appreciate it, I would definitely not put it in the same category as The Midnight Library. It took me awhile to really get into the story, in fact I almost quit before I got there!

Now it also promises a second chance for Jack, a return to normalcy after a young life filled with loss. When he is assigned to guide a well-known singer, his only job is to rig her line, carry her gear, and steer her to the best trout he can find.

But then a human scream pierces the night, and Jack soon realizes that this idyllic fishing lodge may be merely a cover for a far more sinister operation.

This was a pretty good mystery/suspense story. However, Heller could have gone into less detail about the specifics of fishing. I really liked the relationship between Jack and Allison. It was different and refreshing.

The Whistler by John Grisham

Lacy Stoltz is an investigator for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct. She is a lawyer, not a cop, and it is her job to respond to complaints dealing with judicial misconduct. After nine years with the Board, she knows that most problems are caused by incompetence, not corruption.

But a corruption case eventually crosses her desk. A previously disbarred lawyer who now goes by Greg Myers, claims to know of a Florida judge who has stolen more money than all other crooked judges combined.

It seems the judge was secretly involved with the construction of a large casino on Native American land. The Coast Mafia financed the casino and is now helping itself to a sizable skim of each month’s cash with the judge getting a cut and looking the other way. It’s a sweet deal: Everyone is making money.

But now Greg wants to put a stop to it. His only client is a person who knows the truth and wants to blow the whistle and collect millions under Florida law. Greg files a complaint with the Board on Judicial Conduct, and the case is assigned to Lacy, who immediately suspects that this one could be dangerous. Dangerous is one thing. Deadly is something else.

I was a little disappointed by this book. I have liked other John Grisham books and thought this story sounded really interesting. There was a lot going on, and corruption was definitely rampant, but it didn't excite me the way I expect a thriller to.

I have always loved this book, and it was fun to re-read it again as an adult. In fact, I have always enjoyed most of Judy Blume books, and I think I might re-read some of her other books again soon too!

Lucas Ray is shocked when an adorable puppy jumps out of an abandoned building and into his arms. Though the apartment he shares with his mother, a disabled veteran, doesn't allow dogs, Lucas can't resist taking Bella home.

As it becomes more difficult to hide her from the neighbors, Lucas begins to sneak Bella into the VA where he works. There, Bella brings joy and comfort to the patients.

After Bella is picked up by Animal Control because pit bulls are banned in Denver, Lucas has no choice but to send her to a foster home until he can figure out what to do. But Bella, distraught at the separation, doesn't plan to wait. With four hundred miles of dangerous Colorado wilderness between her and her person, Bella sets off on a seemingly impossible and completely unforgettable adventure home.

The book is told from the dog's perspective, and that made it feels a bit odd to me. This book was one our Book to Movie Club selections, and I must admit I liked the movie better. The dog's narration in the movie felt more organic than in the book.

The Choice by Nora Roberts

I really enjoyed this book (as well as the 1st two books in the trilogy). I think listening to the audiobook added to the story as the narrator was able to add Irish accents and correct pronunciation of Irish words.
