Book 4 of the Space Odyssey series
Frank Poole, the astronaut HAL murdered in 2001: A Space Odyssey, has been recovered from space and returned to the Earth's orbit. He didn't actually die, but was put into a sort-of cryosleep as he orbited space. He is now one thousand years into the future, in 3001. Poole somehow saves humanity from their trouble with the Jovian monoliths, while simultaneously adjusting to his new life in the future with its innumerable technological advances.
