The Year of the Beasts by Cecil Castellucci - 175 pages
Tessa has been in love with Charlie for over a year. She's told her best friend and younger sister all about him every day. Then at the summer carnival, Charlie chooses Tessa's little sister Lulu to kiss and they become inseparable. It's the start of the rift between Tessa and Lulu. Tessa starts sneaking into the woods to make out with Jasper, the local loner. Even though she no longer really wants Charlie, she just can't seem to make the anger go away. Then tragedy strikes.
I really can't decide if I liked this book or not. I was very excited to read it as I enjoyed Castellucci's novels and graphic novels in the past. This book is a little different in that it alternates a regular novel chapter with a graphic novel chapter. The regular chapters tell the story of Tessa. The graphic novel chapters tell the story of a girl and her friends who have been turned into mythological creatures -- Medusa, The Minotaur, a Siren, etc. The two stories eventually come together at the end. It's a truly unique book.
