The Selection by Kiera Cass

"The Selection" by Kiera Cass, 336 pages

The US is no more. After several wars, an overthrow by China, and ultimately a fight for independence, the USA changed its name to Illea after the brave general who led the winning battle that freed it again. Not wanting to repeat the mistakes of the past, they create a monarchy. Their first king is Illea and from him a caste system of 8 is established. The monarchy is now searching for their next princess and is seeking among all caste levels to find the perfect one. As in Cinderella, every eligible maiden is asked to enter the "drawing." Young America Singer is part of the 5th class - musicians, singers, artists. Pressured by her secret boyfriend (a 6th class worker), America succumbs to the pressure of her family to enter the contest. She is part of the chosen "Selection" of girls whose lives will be forever changed regardless if the prince selects them for his wife. When America first meets the prince, her mind is filled with preconceived notions that could potentially ruin any chance she has to help her family. After a time, she realizes her heart might be changing towards the prince and instead of not wanting to be a part of the "Selection" she wishes to stay. The story flows very well and gives the reader a look at what the US could feasibly look like over a hundred years from now.  I loved how the author merged various names of countries and continents to form a whole new world. You get the idea that she knows her history and stays up on current events. One word of warning: The book ends with a cliff hanger and it's recommended that you don't read it until the second book is out. Otherwise, it might spoil your read and set the book in a negative light.
