Tithe by Holly Black

Tithe by Holly Black  331 pages

Sixteen-year-old Kaye is a modern nomad. Fierce and independent, she travels from city to city with her mother's rock band until an ominous attack forces the sixteen-year-old back to her childhood home. There, amid the industrial, blue-collar New Jersey backdrop, Kaye soon finds herself an unwilling pawn in an ancient power struggle between two rival faerie kingdoms -- a struggle that could very well mean her death.

Tithe by Holly Black

Tithe by Holly Black, 336 pages

I devoured this book in hours. Kaye is a young 16 year old drop-out. She smokes, drinks and cusses like a sailor. Her mother, Ellen, lives the life of a wannabe band member floating from city to city and bouncing from band to band. Kaye is the main breadwinner having to leave school (mostly due to the constant moving) and find work to help her and her mom survive. One evening while hanging out with friends, she seems to enchant an old broken carousel horse and her friend Janet's boyfriend at the same time. Kenny lunges at Kaye causing her to run away. Along a beaten path, she meets a fey knight. Not worried because she's known about fairies all her life, she aids him and saves his life. That's when everything changes and the world she thought she knew changes forever. This is the first in what is sure to be a wonderful series. I look forward to discovering more about this Fairy world that Holly Black has created in modern times.
