The Magician's Boy by Susan Cooper
The magician's boy wants to learn magic from his master more than anything. However, he is stuck just doing the puppet play the master incorporates into his show. One day the hero of the puppet play, St. George disappears. The furious magician sends the boy into the land of stories to find the puppet.
I was disappointed in this book. It was not anywhere close to as good as Susan Cooper's The Dark Is Rising series. It was obvious where the story was going from the very beginning.
