Rise & Shine Benedict Stone by Phadera Patrick

Rise & Shine Benedict Stone by Phaedra Patrick - 361 pages

Benedict Stone is a mild-mannered, risk-averse jewelry maker who runs a shop originally owned by his late father in a town called Noon Sun. Much to his dismay, Estelle, his wife of 10 years, has left him, partly due to the couple’s unresolved feelings about their childlessness. Lucky for Benedict, his plucky 16-year-old niece, Gemma, suddenly appears, on the run from her family in the States. Gemma takes her uncle in hand, helping him spruce up his shop and turn out more creative pieces of jewelry. She also prods him to woo back his wife. (While clearly meant to be amusing, some of Benedict’s ploys—one involving a sword; another a llama—are deeply cringeworthy.)

RISE AND SHINE, BENEDICT STONE by Phaedra Patrick
Gemma, meanwhile, is clearly harboring a secret; but so, it turns out, is Benedict—a secret that has alienated him from his brother, Gemma’s father, Charlie. The latter eventually arrives on the scene, and family fireworks ensue. Still, the ending is never seriously in doubt. And though the book is eventful, much of it is plodding; the pace only picks up toward the end. Throughout, there’s much talk of gemstones—each chapter heading bears the name of a different stone and a brief description of its potential powers (e.g., Emerald: equilibrium, patience, honesty). Yet despite the attempt to confer a magical aura on the proceedings, the book remains stubbornly earthbound.

Chasing Fireflies by Charles Martin

Chasing Fireflies by Charles Martin
342 pages / 9 hrs, 15 mins

"They have one summer to find what was lost long ago.

"'Never settle for less than the truth,' she told him.

"But when you don't even know your real name, the truth gets a little complicated.  It can nestle so close to home it's hard to see.  It can even flourish inside a lie.  And as Chase Walker discovered, learning the truth about who you are can be as elusive--and as magical--as chasing fireflies on a summer night.

"A haunting story about fishing, baseball, home cooking, and other matters of life and death...from the author of The Dead Don't Dance and When Crickets Cry."  --from the publisher

Beautifully written with heart-warming characters, this is one of those books "everyone should read."  It's not too sweet and not too bitter.  The reader of the audio version was perfect--age and tone of voice with just the right amount of emotion.  Happy sigh.

Everything and the Moon by Julia Quinn

Everything and the Moon by Julia Quinn - 372 pages

Seven years ago, vicar's daughter Victoria Lyndon and Robert Kemble, Earl of Macclesfield, planned to run away together and elope.  Unknown to them, their fathers ruined these plans causing both of them to think the other abandoned them.  Now they've discovered the truth about the past, but can they let go of their hurt feelings to make it work now . . . .

For a book about hurt feelings and estrangements, this was a truly funny read.  I really enjoyed both of these characters and their story of finding one another again.  I liked that it wasn't an immediate romance as it so often is in books.  It was more realistic in taking time to rediscover their feelings.

One Wish by Robyn Carr

One Wish by Robyn Carr - 296 pages
A Thunder Point Novel

Grace is the owner of the flower shop in Thunder Point, Oregon.  What nobody knows is that she was an Olympic gold medalist figure skater before leaving that world behind.  She's just started dating high school teacher Troy and is debating whether to tell him about her past when her past comes to threaten her.  Now she has no choice but to reveal her secret to not only Troy but also to others in her town.
I picked up this book to read after reading a review of it. Unfortunately, I don't quite agree with the review.  I thought the characters and a few plot points stretched credulity a little.  It doesn't seem possible that someone as famous as Grace supposedly was would be able to completely hide her identity simply by going by her middle name.  Someone would have recognized her.  Also, the great menace was too simply resolved and then forgiven for it to be believable.  I also thought the introduction of character of the next book in the series was a little awkward.

The Sinister Sweetness of Splendid Academy by Nikki Loftin

The Sinister Sweetness of Splendid Academy by Nikki Loftin - 283 pages

Lorelei is going to a new school this fall.  The Splendid Academy is a wonderful school where students study only what they want, two mouth-watering meals a day are served, and the playground is every child's dream.  But Lorelei starts to wonder if the school is too good to be true.  With her new friend Andrew, Lorelei starts to investigate the mysterious teachers Ms. Morrigan, Ms. Threnody, and Principal Trapp.

This was a wonderful blend of several fairy tales into one book.  There were elements of Hansel and Gretel, the Sirens of mythology, and more.  This was one of those books that once you started reading you didn't want to put it down.  A great fantasy novel for kids.

The Castle Behind Thorns by Merrie Haskell

The Castle Behind Thorns by Merrie Haskell - 327 pages

Sand wakes up in the chimney of the Sundered Castle.  He is the only living thing in the castle -- trapped by a hedge of thorns that surrounds the castle.  Being trained as a blacksmith, Sand starts to mend things in the castle - buckets, pots, relics in the chapel, and even a skeleton he finds in the crypt.  He is shocked when that skeleton comes to life.  Perrotte was killed over 25 years ago by her stepmother.  Now they are both trapped in the castle behind thorns and must find a way out.
I enjoyed this book.  I picked it up thinking it was a simple retelling of Sleeping Beauty. While it had elements of the fairy tale -- a princess that was meant to be in a long sleep that comes back to life and a castle surrounded by thorn covered hedges -- it was much more than that.  It was a story of politics in Middle Ages France.  It was a parable on forgiveness.  It was also a coming of age story for the two main characters.  It was also extremely atmospheric and creepy.  The image that stayed with me long after reading the book was the mended heart of a saint in the chapel coming to life and having a heartbeat in it's reliquary box.

Devil in Pew Number 7 by:Rebecca Nichols Alonzo

Devil in Pew Number 7  by Rebecca Nichols Alonzo  pg. 271

"When the Lord gets ready for me to leave this church, He won't send the message by the devil."
Robert Nichols  1975

This is the true story of one family's devastating and violent persecution by a man obsessed with controlling the local church.  Rebecca's father, Robert Nichols, was called to serve as pastor at a small church in Sellerstown, North Carolina.  H J Watts was a wealthy member of the community who was in control of the church and many citizens of the farming community.  Mr. Watts was determined to rid himself of this popular preacher and his family.  Pastor Nichols chose to stand up to this man and all of his harsh harassment, even though his family was in danger.  One night this family's whole world was shattered when an armed man came into their home.  Rebecca Nichols Alonzo has written a true story of courage and forgiveness.  This book is a wonderful story about the power of  love and forgiveness.
