This is a collection of novellas set when Celaena Sardothien was a member of the Assassins under Arobynn Hamel in Rifthold. It's before the events of the Throne of Glass series. However, many of the stories told in these novellas are mentioned or alluded to in some way throughout the Throne of Glass series. Additionally, many of the characters from them are major players later on in the Throne of Glass series. I really enjoyed going back to some of these characters and reading about these stories and events mentioned or alluded to. I especially enjoyed going back to Celaena and reading about her time spent with the Assassins. I really enjoyed the Throne of Glass series and I enjoyed this prequel nearly as much. It really made me appreciate the Throne of Glass series even more than I already did, especially Maas' worldbuilding and character arcs. She is so good at worldbuilding.

The story of Celaena Sardothien, King's Champion and Adarlan's Assassin, continues in this third volume of the "Throne of Glass" series. In this book, Celaena is off in Wendlyn where she was sent by the King of Adarlan at the end of the last novel. Celaena is taken by Rowan, a Fae warrior and prince, beyond Wendlyn to Fae lands to meet her aunt Maeve. Maeve is Queen of Doranelle. Chaol and Dorian run into some trouble in Adarlan. Celaena unlocks her true magical potential and gains confidence in herself and her abilities. This story is told from many perspectives and new voices are added, including Manon, who is a Blackbeak witch, and Sorscha, who is a healer in the King's glass castle. I enjoyed reading this book and have enjoyed the series so far. I am very interested in seeing where Maas takes this story in the next volume, "Queen of Shadows."

I enjoyed reading Throne of Glass, so I wanted to read the second in the long series by Maas. This one did not disappoint. In fact, I found this second installment even more thrilling and enjoyable. I especially liked the ending. A secret is revealed at the end that will change Adarlan, Terrasen, and all of Erilea forever. Celaena is a character that I am rooting for, along with Chaol and Dorian. This secret revealed will change the nature of their relationship forever, also.

Celaena Sardothien is the best assassin in Adarlan, even though she's only 18. She's been serving the past year in the salt mines of Endovier doing hard labor after her family was betrayed. Now, the Crown Prince Dorian Havilliard, has summoned her to offer a proposition. He offers Celaena her freedom if she'll fight as his champion to become the new Royal assassin. However, fellow assassins and competitors start turning up dead and Celaena is concerned she could be next. Who is killing the other competitors and why? I have read Maas's "A Court of Thorns and Roses" series and have anticipated reading this series for a while. I am finally getting to it and, so far, I have not been disappointed. I eagerly await reading the second book in this series.
