As if Maddy Black's troubles weren't enough, now there are vampires walking in the daylight invading Chicago.  She has broken ties with the Agency but still can't walk away from a city in need.  The world building in this series is very strong and the books read like an action movie.  It's not high literature but its a fun fast read that is at times laugh out loud funny but can also make you tear up.

Black Wings Series Book 1

Maddy Black inherited the thankless job of escorting souls of those killed in Chicago to the afterlife.  She's been on her own since the age of 13 with Beezle the gargoyle as her only "family."  The supernatural complications in her life are kicked up to a whole other level when a mysterious stranger rents her downstairs apartment.  This series reminds of the Anita Blake vampire slayer books back when they actually had a plot.  Dark humor and snarkiness abound.
