Black Water Rising by Attica Locke

Black Water Rising by Attica Locke - 448 pages
Jay Porter Series Book 1

In the early 1980s struggling lawyer Jay Porter takes his wife out on a birthday cruise on the bayou that turns deadly when they encounter a drowning woman.  Porter knows better than to become involved in someone else's drama but is quickly pulled into a web of deceit that threatens his family.  The story goes between Porter in the book's present and Porter in the past during the civil rights struggle that helped shape him.  Locke does a great job of bringing this era to life and making Porter's world feel gritty and lived in by real people.
