Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb - 480 pages

Boy, soon to become Fitz, was born the bastard child of the King-in-waiting. When he is dropped at his doorstep, his life is forever changed. He finds that he has a link with animals, but his caretaker finds out he has these powers, he repeatedly tells him they are not good.

As Fitz grows, he's thrust into many different roles. Stable boy, student, enemy, lover, and secret assassin for the king. How will he handle it all? Can he let go of this animal magic? How many perils will he go through?

Wonderfully written fantasy story. Robin Hobb is a well-known fantasy author, and her reputation is well-deserved.
