Half the World by Joe Abercrombie

Half the World by Joe Abercrombie - 363 pages

The followup to Half a King shifts the focus from Yarvi's quest for justice for the death of his father to his political machinations to try and save Gettland from annihilation by its enemies.  Thorn, a young girl trying desperately to find her own justice, becomes sworn to Yarvi's service and they embark on a dangerous trek downriver to try and find allies for Gettland against the High King.  This fantasy series has nods to the Lord of the Rings and Wheel of Time in both plotting and world building but it's not a bad thing.  The elements that are enjoyable in those epic classics are present here too; people trying to salvage civilization in a broken world, artifacts from a previous society are viewed as magic, and plenty of dark humor in the face of almost certain death.
