The Mouse That Roared: Disney and the End of Innocence by Henry Giroux and Grace Pollack, 285 pages
Yet, another book bashing Disney for all us lovers of Mickey Mouse. Of course, it was my choice to pick up this book and read it. And, unfortunately, much of this book is very truthful. No matter how we feel, there is no denying Disney is a culture and a great part of American society. Disney has a certain image. I like to believe it is a very innocent and happy image. Children are exposed to Disney as early as infants in the crib. Parents do their nurseries in all sorts of Disney themes. The author points out that Disney has greatly influenced stereotypes especially when it comes to animated movies with young girls as princesses. Teens are also influenced by movies like High School Musical. If you stop and think about it, the Disney brand shapes minds at a very young age. No matter how much we deny it, Disney is also a huge force in global and world politics. This books just makes us think about how large corporations influence our everyday life.
