"Skinwalker" by Faith Hunter, ebook 591 pages
Jane Yellowrock is a Cherokee Skinwalker with a little something extra. Able to shift from human to any animal form, though she prefers her mountain lion form simply known as "beast." Jane remembers little of her past (though Beast seems to know much and hides it from Jane) and her future is full of hunting vampires. When a vampire hires Jane to hunt down a rogue, the gameplay changes. What unfolds is a mystery full of action, romance and thrills. Much like the Mercede Thompson series by Patricia Briggs, you have to wonder if Faith Hunter drew most of her inspiration directly from her. The only downside to the book is the choppy first-person of Beast, the random (and meaningless) shopping excursions, descriptions of "food", and the "in your face" clues that somehow the main character misses. Still, the story plays out well despite the wild tangents and, though I guessed the end far before reading it, it was still an enjoyable read.
