The Twelve by Justin Cronin - 592 pages
Book Two of The Passage Trilogy
This book can be frustrating if you are a reader who likes a linear plot. Cronin likes to meld present and past storylines to create a fuller picture of what happened in his dystopian future. It's a world where secret government experiments to create a new breed of super-soldier accidentally release the 12 on humanity to spread a virus that mimics vampire like behavior. By this book North America has been quarantined for over a hundred years and the remnants of society are trying to create a new civilization out of the ashes of the former United States. The writing style can get in the way of the story sometimes but in the end I find Cronin's vision of the aftermath and the rebuilding of society interesting enough to keep moving forward.
