This is the first book in the Johnny Maxwell Trilogy. It was written in 1992, long before the Hunger Games Trilogy. Like The Hunger Games, this is also teen fiction. Although, this is a science fiction book, I can see many parallels between this and The Hunger Games. In Only You Can Save Mankind, the twelve year old hero, Johnny Maxwell, is caught between reality and the virtual world while playing the video game, Only You Can Save Mankind. Set in 1992, I could just imagine the basic graphics of this computer game Johnny's friend Wobbler has copied for him. In the game, aliens surrender to Johnny and beg him to help him in saving their alien race the Screewees from being killed off. Johnny teams up with Kristy to save the ScreeWees in this fun to read teen adventure. I look forward to reading book two and three.
I downloaded "Only You Can Save Mankind" because it is a Terry Pratchett book, and I am one of his greatest fans. I knew it was not a Discworld series, but was willing to chance it. I know this is touted as a children's/young adult book, but honestly, I loved it.
