Summer Blonde, by Adrian Tomine, 132 pages
Summer Blonde is a series of four stories, drawn in black and white, of relationships and everyday life. The first story, "Alter Ego," is about a ghostwriter who is struggling to write his next big novel. The second story, "Summer Blonde," is about a man who has a crush on a local shopgirl, but she doesn't know he exists and has problems of her own. "Hawaiian Getaway" is about a girl named Hillary who is having a really bad week. "Bomb Scare" is about teenagers and life in the 90s.
Personally, I found this book really unappealing. I heard that Tomine knew how to write characters so realistically, you would swear he just eavesdropped on people. And maybe that's true, but if so, Tomine knows the most shallow, wimpy guys and the women are all portrayed in a very unflattering light. This could be appealing to older teens and younger adults.
