From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler, by E.L. Konigsburg

From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler, by E.L. Konigsburg, 125 pages

I find myself revisiting this classic for a book club featuring books from our childhood.  The premise is pretty cool- Claudia Kincaid wants to run away from home, but she doesn’t want to go anywhere too uncomfortable.  So naturally, she takes her brother and his allowance to stay at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and while they hide out there, they endeavor to discover an art secret, too.  Who didn’t wonder about staying overnight at the museum or the library as a child?  However, the book felt pretty dated to me and I wonder how kids today would feel about references to typewriters, things costing a nickel, and transistor radios.

  1. This was one of my favorite books as a kid. But I can see how it wouldn't hold up for today's audience. Today the museum's security system would catch the kids in a couple minutes.
