Room, by Emma Donoghue

Room, by Emma Donoghue, 321 pages

It doesn't take very long to realize that all is not right in the world as seen through the eyes of 5-year old Jack.  Mainly because Jack thinks that the 11-foot square room that he and his mother live in is the entire world.  Readers understand that Jack's mom was kidnapped and imprisoned in a shed for 7 years, during which time she gave birth to Jack.  But the book is told from Jack's point of view, with a sense of innocence and honesty that comes from not being a part of society.

Fans of Haddon's Curious Incident... might like this- it has the same innocent storyteller angle.  And while it was written for adults, it is not graphic and could be of interest to teens, too.
