Ooku, the Inner Chambers (v 1), by Fumi Yoshinaga

Ooku, the Inner Chambers (v 1), by Fumi Yoshinaga, 198 pages

In this adult manga, set in Edo-period Japan, 3/4 of the male population has died due to a mysterious plague.  Over time, the people forget that their shogun was not always a woman and that men were anything other than prized pets kept safe for mating and marriages.  The Ooku are the men who live in the shogun's inner chambers, a sort of male harem.  This is a really interesting take on gender roles, and it really pleases me to see it in a manga setting (which, let's face it, can be sorta sexist at times).  Comparisons will undoubtedly be made to Vaughan's Y: the Last Man, but frankly, I like this better.

Flower of Life 1, by Fumi Yoshinaga

Flower of Life, 1, by Fumi Yoshinaga, 184 pages

Harutaro is starting school late, but with a good reason- he has just recovered from leukemia.  He finds a friend in Shota, and a niche in drawing manga- he's just a regular student.  The book revolves around the antics of Haru's flamboyant teacher, and his classmates, who always seem to have the best intentions.  This was an okay, "slice-of-life" kind of manga- I don't know that I really need to read any more of it, though.
