The Fairy's Mistake by Gail Carson Levine -- 96 pages
The Fairy Ethelinda is ready to cast spells. When Rosella is kind, she blesses her with jewels that pour out of her mouth when she speaks. When her identical twin sister Myrtle is rude, she curses her with insects and pests that pour out of her mouth.
But when she sits back proudly to watch her handiwork, things go awfully wrong as it appears that Rosella has been cursed and Myrtle has been blessed. Now she must find a way to fix it.

The Princess Test by Gail Carson Levine
The Princess Test by Gail Carson Levine -- 91 pages
Lorelei, the blacksmith's daughter, is a good natured girl with all the kindness you could want, but she has one problem: everything must be just so. As a baby she was the only child ever to have silk diapers and milk from the mountain yaks. And as a young lady, she can hardly do anything without half killing herself. But she can embroider, and she can hang laundry.
She is hanging laundry one day when Prince Nicholas rides by.
King Humphrey has decided it is time for Prince Nicholas to marry and to marry only the finest princess, but Nicholas has already fallen in love with Lorelei.
While Lorelei's nanny, Trudy is plotting harm against Lorelie, Prince Nicholas' parents are devising a ginormous test for the princess who would want to marry him.
Gail Carson Levine re-imagines fairy tales in a charming and humorous way for young girls, and in my case, older girls as well.

The Fairy's Mistake by Gail Carson Levine
The Fairy's Mistake by Gail Carson Levine - 87 pages
This is a retelling of the fairy tale of the frogs and pearls. A good girl is rewarded by a fairy by dropping jewels every time she speaks. Her mean sister is punished by spitting out bugs and snakes when she speaks. However, neither the reward nor the punishment turn out to be what the fairy intended.
This retelling is pretty good. It was actually one of the better tellings of this fairy tale that I have read before. (I think I've seen more twisted versions of this tale than regular versions.) Another great fairy tale retelling for kids.

Princess Sonora and the Long Sleep by Gail Carson Levine
Princess Sonora and the Long Sleep by Gail Carson Levine - 107 pages
Princess Sonora was given the gift of being ten times more brilliant than anyone else on earth. Unfortunately, this makes it so no one wants to listen to her and what she knows. There is even a phrase that becomes common thanks to her - "Princess Sonora knows. Just don't ask her."
This is a retelling of Sleeping Beauty. It was a cute story with enough of a twist to keep it interesting.
