It's Only Slow Food Until You Try to Eat It: Misadventures of a Suburban Hunter-Gatherer

It's Only Slow Food Until You Try to Eat It: Misadventures of a Suburban Hunter-Gatherer by Bill Heavey 274 pages published 2013

I enjoyed this book a great deal.
Bill Heavey is longtime contributor to the Field & Stream magazine as well as other publications.
Outdoor writing is filled with experts whereas Bill Heavey found the other end of the skill spectrum was wide open, and he made the best of it.
I didn't realize it, but good eating can be found in your back yard, in the cracks of sidewalks, in ditches, and in other peoples' yard as well. With the help of a few colorful friends, and a good deal of humor, Bill finds an amazing wealth of nutrition in areas we all walk past.
The best thing Bill Heavy finds, and falls in love with, is the lovely Michelle. Awwwww...
A good story with food, outdoors, humor, and true love.

Dandelion Hunter: Foraging the Urban Wilderness, by Rebecca Lerner

Dandelion Hunter: Foraging the Urban Wilderness, by Rebecca Lerner, 224 pages

This non-fiction book began as a blog (http://firstways.com/) and an experiment in urban foraging- the practice of eating wild fruits, nuts, berries and weeds, or harvesting them for medicine. Becky Lerner thinks she could survive an epic disaster by eating wild plants and berries, but when she challenges herself to eat only that for a week, she finds out that it is tougher to do than she realized.  But with some research and some knowledgeable friends, she finds that it can be done and can be more satisfying than she expected.  I thought this was fascinating- the writing style wasn't my favorite, and I guess I really wanted some photos, but that is why being able to refer to the blog was a nice bonus.  It's the subject matter that is so interesting.
