Vampires are being targeted by the government for a registration program to track their movements.  Merit finds out they are being targeted by something else more sinister when vampires start disappearing and later turn up truly and forever dead.  The snark and strong female characters keep me coming back to this series for further adventures.

Merit heads out of Chicago on a hunt for a magical nemesis who is trying to locate an ancient artifact with the power to destroy the world.  In the process Merit discovers that what she thought she knew about the powers at work in the world was just the tip of the iceberg.  It was a nice change of pace to see Merit out of her Chicago comfort zone and the action is non-stop and I can't say anything about the romance elements without major spoilers.

Chicago is in turmoil over the existence of paranormals and Merit's personal life is no picnic either.  Tensions come to a head when Lake Michigan turns black and the sky turns red.  This book explores magic users and the world of faerie in further than it has been done before in the series.  The action is strong and the characters keep me coming back to find out what happens next.

This book focuses on the fallout from the attack on the Cadogan House in the previous book.  The Mayor has the city's supernatural population on lockdown but there are illegal raves and drug use that are leading to indiscriminate bloodletting.  Merit investigates and finds new and old enemies conspiring against the vampire society.  The end is a shocker and leaves you wondering where the series is going.  The plotting is falling off some in this series but I'm investing enough in the characters that I will keep on going.

Merit continues in her role as Sentinel for the Cadogan vampire house in Chicago.  She is given the task as acting as security for an upcoming conclave of shapeshifters that will help determine the balance of power for the future.  When a planning meeting is shot up in drive by, the hunt is on for the culprit.  Merit continues to be a strong heroine with a distinctive voice that is fun to read.  Her relationship with the master of the house deepens and becomes a true partnership.  The cliffhanger of an ending has a huge impact on where the series is headed and I'm off to start Book 4.

The events in this book start a month past the end of the first book.  Merit is continuing to adjust to her new life and new role in the Cadogan vampire house.  Merit is forced to reconnect with her estranged nouveau riche family and to use those connections to help investigate a threat against the vampires of Chicago.  The relationship with the master of the house, Ethan Sullivan, continues to heat up as well.  The writing quality can be a little choppy but the characters are strongly written and their emotional honesty rings true.  Off to get Book 3 in eBook format...

This is a fun, fast read that introduces Merit, a vampire changed with out consent, who is forced to navigate a new life within the vampire houses of Chicago.  Of course, there is a love / hate romance going on with her maker who is also the Master of a vampire house.  The action is strong and the characters are compelling. I am devouring the rest of the series quickly.  Be warned that there is a strong love for the Cubs displayed throughout...
