A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas - 432 pages
A Court of Thorns and Roses is the first book in this titular, well-known YA series by Sarah J. Maas. Feyre is a huntress, driven by the need to keep her family alive after her father squandered away their fortune in his merchant dealings. One day, she kills a wolf and is swept away into a land of the Fae, who were known to have killed and tortured humans like herself for centuries. However, everything Feyre has been told about the Fae seems to be untrue. In fact, in this loose re-telling of Beauty and the Beast, you can probably guess how she begins to feel about her "captor", Tamlin. But trouble is afoot, as a fierce and mighty force is sweeping the lands of the Fae, threatening to encompass and destroy the entire world.
I have been meaning to read this series for years. The fandom that surrounds the works of Sarah J. Maas is huge and I've tried my best to avoid "giving into the hype". However, I did cave a few months ago and read the first book in her new adult series, House of Earth and Blood: Crescent City #1. That book captured me and I was told that this series and Throne of Glass were must reads for any YA fan. So I decided to start..... and I'm so glad that I did. This book was very good. I really did enjoy it and ended up getting sucked into the phenomenal world-building. There were some phrases and terms used that made me feel a little weird, like "mate" to refer to one's partner. Another one was the constant use of "male" and "female", instead of "man", "woman", "person"... literally any other word, please. Some of the action was heavy with typical YA tropes and unrealistic sequences, but the overall plot was very good. 4/5 stars.
