Those Wild Wyndhams by Claudia Renton

Those Wild Wyndhams: Three Sisters at the Heart of Power by Claudia Renton - 458 pages including a Family Tree, Acknowledgements, Footnotes, Bibliography, Index and Illustration Credits.

A family biography of the wealthy and privileged Wyndhams , focused on the three daughters whose group portrait by John Singer Sargent was considered a masterpiece in its day: Mary, Madeline and Pamela. The Wyndhams were one of the 400 aristocratic families who constituted the political and social ruling class of Great Britain during the Victorian and Edwardian Ages.

All of that ended with the advent of the Great War in 1914.  The sisters struggled to cope with the changes wrought by the war and its aftermath, especially the loss of sons and sons-in-law, nephews and cousins who died in the slaughter.

Carefully researched and using the letters, journals and memoirs of all the principal persons to allow them to speak for themselves, this is historical writing at its best. Excellent background for fans of "Victoria," or "The Crown."
