Rope by Tim Queeny

Rope: How a Bundle of Twisted Fibers Became the Backbone of Civilization by Tim Queeney -323 pages

This is an interesting survey of how rope in its many forms has driven technology and exploration. Queeney is an experienced sailor and his book covers expected topics such as sailing, mountaineering, and the historic methods of making natural rope. The book also explores modern uses of synthetic rope materials such as nylon, polyethylene, and Kevlar. Rope has been used in projects from the Giza pyramids to managing the descent of rovers on Mars. In the future, materials such as graphene may even allow the construction of a space elevator to replace rockets in placing objects in orbit.
