Justinian by Peter Sarris

Justinian: Emperor, Soldier, Saint by Peter Sarris -501 pages

The Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian (d. 565) is known primarily for his clarification of Roman law, reconquest of Africa and Italy, developing an orthodoxy of Christian belief, and commissioning the Hagia Sophia church. He's also been criticized for persecution of religious minorities and callous treatment of the reconquered regions in the west. The author takes an even-handed approach to the emperor's legacy, noting his meddling in church affairs may have created more division than unity in some regions. But also believes Justinian ruled the empire to the best of his ability during a disastrous outbreak of bubonic plague and increased pressure from the Persian empire in the east. This was an enlightening book on an important figure in European history.
