An Intrigue of Witches, Esme Addison | 288 pages
This wasn't at all what I expected. There are just way too many concepts trying to find space in a story that doesn't have room for it.
We're in Now, except not quite. There are relevant cultural references, but then also this AI-takeover conspiracy, politics, plus witches, sorcerers, and fairies? All layered over a historical mystery that includes US presidents, slaves, British royalty, Scottish immigrants, and probably more. There's a car chase and a fire and a couple break-ins. This ship of chaos is steered by our heroine, a redheaded black female archeologist (who might be a witch). Oh, and a maybe-romance.
A couple points for interesting ideas but honestly, it was too much to keep track of and I stopped caring.
