Sees Behind Trees, Michael Dorris

Sees Behind Trees, Michael Dorris | 104 pages

Visually impaired Walnut cannot earn his adult name the same way other boys do, by hitting a target with a bow and arrow. With his highly developed other senses, however, he earns a new name: Sees Behind Trees. When Grey Fire invites him on a trip to find the Place of Waters with his skills, he is excited and nervous to find his place in the community as a man.

This is a sweet coming of age story that introduces some big concepts: disability, coming of age, sibling relationships, outsiders, desires, and more.
