Shades: The Dragon and the Fire by Atlas Theseus Schmidt

Shades: The Dragon and the Fire by Atlas Theseus Schmidt, 320 pages

The year is 2635 and a virus has transformed the human race, bestowing superhuman abilities on a small portion of the population. The world is ruled by the cruel Overseers, who stay in power over the "pure" humans by capturing and killing Shades--those with abilities. When Purite Artemis Rhyex transforms into what she hates most, her world is turned upside down and she must fight to survive.

The Dragon and the Fire was a smooth read. The world, while so much different than ours, felt real from the beginning; it was easy to slip into the world the main character has grown up in. While I enjoyed the book, I got frustrated with Artemis. She always seems to make exactly the wrong decision, and never quite learns from her experiences. But there are twists and turns in the story that add a richness to the novel.

The book doesn't end on a cliffhanger per se, but it does have a twist that had me instantly reaching for the next one, so be prepared!
