Blood and Treasure: Daniel Boone and the Fight for America's First Frontier by Bob Drury and Tom Clavin

Blood and Treasure by Bob Drury and Tom Clavin -383 pages

The frontier in the subtitle was the area of northern and central Kentucky that was furiously contested by white settlers and Native Americans in the eighteenth century. Tribes from both sides of the Ohio River struggled against the influx of whites, especially during the Revolutionary War period when Daniel Boone and others found their way over the Appalachians. The blood and treasure reference is from a quote by Boone referring to the loss of two sons and a brother during conflicts with the Shawnee and other tribes. Ironically, though Boone helped lead the way for millions of settlers, he lost all of his land claims in Kentucky that had not been properly registered before eventually settling in Missouri. This is an enlightening book on the relations between Native Americans and whites during the Revolutionary and colonial time periods.
