Cal Hooper moves to the tiny town of Ardnakelty in western Ireland to escape -- to escape a job with the Chicago Police Department that had him questioning the settings on his own moral compass and to escape the aftermath of a bitter breakup that left him questioning his life choices.
So he retires at 48 and moves to Ireland to restore a property he's bought after house hunting on the internet. Something about the newcomer gives away his history, however, and he's soon recruited by a local teen to track down a beloved older brother who's gone missing.
French is good at creating characters with complicated pasts, personalities, and motives that keep them from being pigeonholed as heroes or villains. She's also adept at keeping readers guessing -- in a good way. But this novel differs from her others in that its protagonist is an American transplant to her home country of Ireland. It's also a standalone book unrelated to her Dublin Murder Squad mysteries and I would recommend it to anyone looking to give this bestselling author's books a try.
