Still Life by Louise Penny

Still Life by Louise Penny - 312 pages

This is the first book in the wildly popular mystery series that features Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and the residents of Three Pines, a bucolic village in Quebec.

Still Life is not for readers who favor thrillers. The plot develops gradually and the appeal is in the interaction between the characters. I also loved the descriptions of the landscape and the meals as well as the pitch-perfect references to classic literature and real-world figures like Abby Hoffman, all of which add depth to the story.

It's easy to see why Still Life earned multiple honors, including Anthony Award for Best First Novel. I will be reading more books in this series and look forward to seeing how the characters continue to evolve.
