Shiner by Amy Jo Burns - 270 pages
In a very small town in West Virginia, fifteen year old Wren Bird lives with her mother, Ruby and her serpent-handling preacher father, Briar. Her father has become a legened, both near and far after being struck by lighning as a young man, turning one of his eyes white. Preaching on Sundays to their tiny, isolated community that worships him, Briar can do no wrong. Or can he?
Set in a community swimming in moonshine, this is a story about love, loss, revenge, secrets, and ultimately the power of female friendship and the ways women protect each other.
I knew very little going into this book (which I think is the best way to go into it), and was hooked right from the start. This story totally gave me Where the Crawdads Sing vibes, and I absolutely loved it.
