Spearhead by Adam Makos

Spearhead: An American Tank Gunner, His Enemy, and a Collision of Lives in World War II by Adam Makos -393 pages

Spearhead was the nickname of the U.S. Third Armored Division, and this book follows a tank crew through the last year of the war in Europe. Realizing the Sherman tank's vulnerability to Germany's later model tanks, the more powerful Pershing was introduced. Clarence Smoyer was the gunner on one of the first Pershing's in Europe, but its crew were designated to be in the most dangerous lead position when making the final advances into Germany. The book examines several enemy encounters and their aftermath. Rare combat video footage of Smoyer's tank destroying a German Panther is accessible on the author's website. Readers with an interest in World War II will enjoy Makos' latest.
