Sarah Jane by
James Sallis - 207 p.
Sarah Jane Pullman (or Pretty, as she is called by her
father, “but I’m not”) tells the story of how events took her from her
hardscrabble Tennessee hillbilly roots to eventually becoming a sheriff in New Mexico whose first assignment is to locate her missing predecessor. The story winds throughout her life - dealing with an often absent mother and a father who makes bad
people disappear, youthful “trouble” that leads to mandatory military service,
marriages that end badly. Her narration is circuitous and sometimes difficult
to follow, but it’s well worth the effort in this oh so noir little tale.
