Plain Kate by Erin Bow - 314 pages
Kate's life is in danger from the townsfolk who believe her carvings are indications of her witchcraft. To escape the town, she makes a deal with the mysterious Linay. He will give her the secret desire of her heart for her shadow. But she soon discovers that being with a shadow is dangerous and that Linay is planning something horrible with her shadow.
This was one of the most depressing books I have ever read. Kate's situation keeps getting worse and worse as the story progresses. I actually spent the last couple chapters in tears. I would only recommend this book if you want a serious cry.
