Darkest Minds Series by Alexandra Bracken

1) The Darkest Minds - 576 pages
2) Never Fade - 576 pages
3) In the Afterlight - 624 pages

* Through the Dark - 448 pages (Compilation of novellas taking place throughout the first three books that give viewpoints of the story from other characters.)

I was intrigued by the preview for the upcoming Darkest Minds movie so I sought out the books it was based on.  I was very happy to see that all of the series was available for immediate reading through the library's Hoopla app.  The worst thing about reading a dynamic series is waiting for the next book to come in and with Hoopla that is never a problem since everything is always available.

This series is set in a dystopian future United States where teens have begun either dying or exhibiting psi powers as they hit puberty.  The psi powers are so terrifying to the general public that the government creates programs where psi kids are rounded up into camps for their "protection" and "rehabilitation."  We absorb this horrifying world through the eyes of Ruby who is taken from her school at the age of 10 and sent to the camps.  Throughout her horrible experiences there is a running theme of finding the slivers of light that appear even in the darkest times.

I enjoyed these books for the well rounded characters and the deep understanding of their interior motivations that were conveyed.  Parts are pretty brutal with violence and death so definitely for an older teen audience and adults.  Fans of the Hunger Games and Maze Runner will find much to enjoy here.  I'm looking forwards to seeing the movie and seeing if it stays true to the books or goes out in left field like the Maze Runner movies eventually did.
