Fifth in the series of historical mysteries based on the author's ancestors, the famous Kuisl family of executioners in seventeenth century Bavaria.
In 1688 Magdalena Kuisl (the Hangman's Daughter), her husband Simon and their twin sons Peter and Paul, along with Magdalena's younger sister Barbara, accompany their father Jakob, the Hangman of Schonga, on a journey to Bamberg to attend the wedding of Jakob's estranged brother Bartholomaus. The invitation was reluctantly extended at the behest of Bartl's bride Katherina, and reluctantly accepted by Jakob at the insistence of Magdalena. Jakob's children were not even aware of their uncle's existence until Barbara's twin brother Georg was exiled from Schongau, and their father sent him to his uncle to continue his apprenticeship in the family business.
But when the quarrelsome Kuisls arrive in Bamberg, they find a town on the verge of panic. Someone is murdering members of Bamberg's leading families and leaving body parts scattered about. Soon there are wild rumors of a werewolf stalking the streets in the hours of darkness. The Kuisls, as usual, cannot resist the challenge, and are all soon deeply embroiled in the hunt. It may be that this killer is even more dangerous than a werewolf.
