Mars v.3 by Fuyumi Soryo - 198 pages

The third episode of Mars revolves around Rei’s motorcycle racing.  While Kira works on a painting of Rei for an art contest, he is preparing for a riding competition.  She learns how his love of racing grew from a childhood in America, growing up on the racetrack.  Kira also learns the truth about what happened to Rei’s twin brother, Sei.  Kira listens to the grueling 8-hour team race on the radio while she paints Rei’s picture.  In the last hours, Rei brings the team’s bike from eighth place to first in a show of skill.  The win is taken away by disqualification, but it doesn’t take away from Rei’s achievement.  Kira is able to show him her prize-winning painting: Mars, the God of War.  The long motorcycle race that took up half the volume was exciting to follow, and the action well drawn.  We see deeper into the characters’ loves and fears.  Can’t wait to pick up volume four.
