The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson

The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson, 374 pages

Brandon Sanderson has created a world that makes chalk drawings scary. And it's wonderful. All Joel, the chalk maker's son, has ever wanted was to be a Rithmatist, having the ability to draw chalk characters and bring them to life to fight. After graduating school, all Rithmatists have to serve on the front lines of Nebrask, defending the American Isles from wild chalklings. But something is going on and Rithmatic students are disappearing. Joel may not be a Rithmatist, but he has spent all his free time studying Rithmatics, and feels he can help his mentor, Professor Fitch, find the kidnapper. Along the way, he makes friends and enemies trying to bring the kidnapper to justice. This was a very engaging fantasy novel, with a touch of steampunk in it as well. Great read.
