The President and the Assassin

By Scott Miller
422 pages

This publication provides insight into the lives of the assassin, Leo Czolgosz, and his victim, President William McKinley. The lives of these two men would not have been more different. William McKinley was a Civil War hero. His willingness to support big business facilitated his victory as President.  Leo Czolgosz was a loner, and sometimes a drifter, who reached out to known anarchist of his day, with little success. Leo followed the radical teachings of the mortared Albert Parsons, and also Emma Goldman. Both preached violence as a useful mention to end social injustice.

Besides detailing the lives of these two men, the volatile U.S. economy, of the day, was explored in detail. The poor remained poor and the rich became powerful. Clashes over unskilled worker’s wages and living conditions grew, especially for the immigrant.
