A Princess of Mars, by Edgar Rice Burroughs, 186 pages

A Princess of Mars, by Edgar Rice Burroughs, 186 pages

First of all, that cover makes this book look far more salacious than it was.  This is the first book in the "Barsoom" series, or the John Carter-on-Mars-series.  It is a good foil for Herland, because this book was written near the same time (1912).  John Carter is a Civil War veteran from Virginia, and one day, out of nowhere, he is on Mars.  No real explanation given, but there he is.  Once on Mars, he falls in with various factions of Martians and falls in love with a Martian princess and just generally goes around doing heroic Earth-man things and saving the Martians from themselves.  Kind of imperialist, when you think about it... Also interesting as a historic work of literary fiction.
